Inaugural Viviane Gerardu Writing Encouragement Award

The ACTATE Executive is proud to announce the winner of the first Viviane Gerardu Writing Encouragement Award in 2020.

This award commemorates Viviane Gerardu, a member of the ACTATE community who lost a 5 year battle with cancer earlier this year. It honours her contribution to the teaching of English in the ACT and her championing of young writers. It will be awarded on an annual basis.

Remembering Viviane Gerardu

Viviane was one of those inspirational and generous teachers who made a difference in the lives of her students and her colleagues.

Many will remember her for the development of the Language for Understanding Across the Curriculum (LUAC) resources and workshops she presented to ACT teachers during the 1990s.

As an ACTATE member, Viviane presented regularly at  conferences and workshops and at AATE national conferences. Teachers always left her workshops with practical strategies and interesting resources to use with their students. She has also been published widely through books such as the English Quest series (2000) and articles in  ACTATE’s journal, Activate.
